DESTINATION: PURE NEW ZEALAND

New Zealands fabulous environment makes it perfect for tramping and one of the worlds top walking destinations. Once youve ventured out youll soon see why Peter Jackson chose it as the Middle Earth film set.
New Zealand has a bit of everything: lakes, mountains, rivers, desolated places and lots of sheep...  Heres a review of some of the more popular trails for you to consider:

Routeburn Track (32km, 2-3 days, all year): This moderate-level tramp links the National Parks of Mount Aspiring and Fiordland via the Harris Saddle. Features include waterfalls, mountains, valleys, alpine lakes, birdlife and spectacular scenery. In summer it is very popular and passable but in winter and spring there is high avalanche danger and alpine experience is necessary.

Milford Track (54km, 5 days): This walk through Fiordland National Park is the most popular in NZ due to an array of lakes, rivers, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains and lush forests. It begins at the head of Lake Te Anau (boat access) and continues to beautiful Milford Sound. Comfortable lodge accommodation is available.

Franz Josef Glacier: This amazing glacier can be reached by short treks through the valleys around the Franz Josef township to the base of the ice. If you want to trek on the glacier guides are available for hikes.

Abel Tasman Coastal Track (51km, 3-5 days, all year): This easy to moderate track takes you through coastal forests and golden sandy beaches in the beautiful Marlborough Sound area. The proximity to the sea keeps the climate mild all year.

Tongariro Northern Circuit (13km, 7-8 hours): Many people consider this NZs best day walk. The circuit winds over Mt Tongariro and around Mt Ngauruhoe passing volcanic craters and glacial valleys.

Tramping Safety...
NZs weather is changeable and often cold. You should pack warm, all-weather gear and always check forecasts before setting out. DOC visitor centres have up to date details on tracks and often display posted warnings for changing weather. Some tracks will also have rangers present to advise of incoming bad weather. Make sure you choose a track that suits your skills and experience - be as realistic as possible. Pack plenty of food but try to avoid heavy tins and packets to lug around. Trail snacks are a great idea for day time eating. Always let someone know where you are going.
Most routes are fairly populated but its best not to trek alone.
