ITINERARY:

Darwin to Kakadu (zz)

Spot crocs (and other wild creatures!) on a cruise along the fresh waters of the Mary River Wetlands. Discover more about the land and its stories at the Bowali Visitor Centre. The whole of Kakadu is spread out before you at Ubirr Rock, where we spend the afternoon. Camp in Kakadu National Park.

Kakadu to Darwin

Jim Jim Falls is our first stop today, and it’s a stunner! This afternoon, the spectacular gorge of Twin Falls is experienced onboard a National Park operated boat and along the boardwalk (seasonal and fees apply). Farewell to Kakadu and travel back to Darwin, arriving late afternoon.

Darwin to Katherine Gorge (zz)

South of Darwin is Katherine. Spend the whole afternoon at the majestic Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk). Experience the striking beauty while canoeing or cruising (own expense) through the gorge itself. Camp near Katherine Gorge.

Katherine Gorge to Tennant Creek (zz)

Not far to the south is Mataranka, where you can revive in a sparkling thermal pool. Next stop is the iconic Daly Waters outback hotel, the Territory’s oldest pub. Camp tonight at an outback station.

Tennant Creek to Alice Springs (zz)

Check out the sacred site of the Devils Marbles, which balance precariously on their rocky perch. Cross the Tropic of Capricorn and arrive in Alice Springs late afternoon.

Alice Springs – Kings Canyon – Uluru (zz)

You’ll see how red it is in the ‘Centre’ as we drive to Kings Canyon. Get some exercise today we’ll hike the full rim of the canyon. See the North and South Walls, the Amphitheatre, the Lost City and Garden of Eden. Then were back on the road, get ready for your first view of Uluru (Ayers Rock). We camp at a private campground at Ayers Rock resort.

Uluru and Kata Tjuta (zz)

Sunrise at Uluru is worth the early start! Walk partway around the base and check out the Cultural Centre. get up close to the red domes of Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and sip a glass of ‘Aussie’ bubbly as you watch the Uluru sunset. We camp at Ayers Rock resort.

Uluru to Coober Pedy (zz)

We go underground today, travelling south through the rugged desert country into South Australia to Coober Pedy. Stay in an underground bunkhouse tonight.

Coober Pedy to Quorn (zz)

Check out the sights of Cooper Pedy on a town tour, see an opal cutting demonstration and have a go at ‘noodling’ for opals! Further south there’s ancient salt lakes which are remnants of an inland sea and the bus refuels at Glendambo (population 30). Quorn is a quaint historical railway township and we stay for two nights at the historical “Mill”.

Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound (zz)

Hike and explore Wilpena Pound one of Australia’s National Landscapes! View Aboriginal rock paintings at Yourambulla Caves and learn about the hardships of sheep farming in the mid 1800’s at Kanyaka Homestead. Keep your eyes out for wildlife!

Quorn to Adelaide

Hike to the Dutchman’s stern for stunning 360 degree views of Quorn, Spencer Gulf and the Flinders Ranges! Near the frontier township of Melrose we take a short walk across a swinging bridge and enjoy panoramic views from the Mt remarkable lookout. Our last stop is the Clare Valley before arriving into Adelaide.

Adelaide to Grampians NP (zz)

Cross the Murray River and pass through small country towns. Hike the Grampians, including Hollow Mountain, MacKenzie Falls and sunset views from The Balconies and Reeds Lookout. Stay in private multi-share accommodation near Halls Gap.

Grampians NP to Great Ocean Road (zz)

Hike to the Pinnacle, it’s a challenge but worth it! Travel south to the coast and Warrnambool and the start of the Great Ocean Road. There’s a lot to see: the Bay of Islands, Bay of Martyrs, London Bridge and Lock Ard Gorge then sunset at the Twelve Apostles – gorgeous!

Great Ocean Road to Melbourne

Take a helicopter ride over the amazing Twelve Apostles (optional) or climb down the Gibson Steps to the beach. Walk in the tree tops at the Otway Fly (entry included) and spot for koalas near Lorne. Check out the surf at world famous Bells Beach and the surf shops at Torquay.

BRING: Sturdy walking shoes (ankle high), swimming gear, hat & sunscreen, toiletries, warm clothing in winter, water bottle, torch, insect repellent, camera.
