NEW YORK CITY

Pic: www.visitedplanet.comThe Big Apple needs little introduction. There's the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Manhattan, Queens, the Seinfeld restaurant, Central Park, the World Trade Centre, the Rockefeller Centre and we haven't even touched on places to eat, drink and make merry.

Thankfully there are plenty of VIP hostels for you to stay in so you can pack in as many sights as possible. However an excellent 48 hour tour could include a clamber to the top of the Empire State Building and then a green circuit of Central Park making sure you catch a baseball game. Then pop into a museum on Museum Mile, then stroll down 5th Avenue to Times Square where you could take in a Broadway Show. The next day you could visit Wall Street, remember the victims of 911 at the new World Trade Centre, head over on the free Statten Island ferry and wave to the Statue of Liberty, then head to Soho or Greenwich for a lively evening. So much to do so little time!

SAN FRANCISCO

Remember to wear some flowers in your hair if you head to San Francisco. This city is one you'll grow fond of with lots of sights in and around the Bay, good eating and a laidback funk to it. It's soon clear why so many songs are written about San Fran.

The best place to start exploring the peninsula that makes up this city is of course the Golden Gate Bridge - run, walk, drive or cycle over, just experience it anyway you can. There could be fog, it could be clear - both will be good. Extend your bridge exploration to the Golden Gate Park and enjoy museums, gardens, flowers and lakes. From the bridge or along Marina Blvd you'll spy the famed Alcatraz, another place you'll want to get to.

Another classic experience in San Francisco are the cable cars. These provide access to the Russan and Nob Hills and some great panoramas particularly from Coit Tower.

After all the sightseeing you'll want to get in touch with the tastes and flavours of San Francisco. There the city has you covered with  the most restaurants per capita than any other American city. You'll go out rolling.

BOSTON

Grand old Boston is like the glorious older and wiser cousin to its east coast neighbour New York. While not as sparkly its world-renowned architecture and incredible cultural institutions have been inspiring forward-thinkers, poets, artists and filmakers for centuries. Come along and feel equally inspired. The late spring is a fantastic time to visit when parks are flowering. Make sure you include these on your itinerary.

Most people also want to see Harvard while they're in Boston, one of America's most prestigious colleges. They'll also want to take in old Boston with some of the classic architecture of buildings such as Custom House, the Old State House and City Hall. You can also get your fair share of museums hhere with the Peabody, Salem (yes of witchcraft lore!), Boston Tea Party and more.

LOS ANGELES

Pic: www.visitedplanet.comThe City of Angels is a must for anyone evenhalf interested in the Hollywood movie industry. This is the ultimate chance to rub shoulders with celebrities. They might not be dining at Pizza Hut but you could catch them at award nights, local theatre, Walk of Fame Ceremonies or by joining a studio audience. Other than that you could be content to try peering across secure fences to look at their swish mansions in Beverley Hills.

There are tastes of Hollywood everywhere however even if you don't see Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. You could stroll the Hollywood Walk of Fame and enjoy the handprints of iconic filmstars outside the Chinese Theater. You could head to viewpoints of the Hollywood sign or even to Universal Studios.

There are plenty of other iconic sights as well. Palisades Park is where Route 66 starts or ends depending on your take on it. There's  famed Muscle beach and all the seaside action of Santa Monica, Malibu and Venice.
