NEW ZEALAND

Pic: WichidTo enjoy some of the first New Year's celebrations in the world head to New Zealand. The biggest events are always in Auckland where the fireworks are simply amazing--head near the Sky Tower. Alternatively head to Gisborne on the North Island, the first major city that sees the New Year in. Otherwise all centres will have something on. For instance Queenstown celebrates with a one day international cricket game and Dunedin has a filth New Years Eve music concert in the Octagon to get you rocking it in.

There are a number of other music festival options. Check out Rhythm and Vines (Gisborne), Coromandel Gold (Whitianga), High Life (Matakna) and Music Mountain Matakana (Matakana). Choices!!

CARDIFF, WALES

Scotland has Hogmany and Wales has Calennig. The choice is yours for equal amounts of merry making, however the great thing about Calennig is it goes for three days! So if New Years Eve just isn't enough, head here for free live music outside Cardiff City Hall, an outdoor ice-rink where you can skate in the new year, family funfairs that run over two days, a firework show and more.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

For perhaps the best firework show come New Years Eve, head to Sydney!  It's summer time in Australia meaning you can actually enjoy being outside, without freezing, into the wee hours of the night! Sydney is a great party city and knows how to enjoy itself. Stake out a good spot by the harbour for your fireworks viewing and have a great time.

The alternative to the harbour is of course the action down at Bondi Beach where big name DJs consistently turn up for all the action on the beach.

COOLANGATTA/TWEED HEADS, QLD VS NSW

Pic: www.visitedplanet.comDo it twice on the NSW and Queensland border! These cities actually have different time zones. Yeah it's weird but that just makes it twice as much fun. Simply cross the road on either Boundary Street or Thompson and count it down again. Just remember it happens first in New South Wales!

If are in Australia, remember you can still have your New Years day dip in the water, but instead of an icy plunge like we've explained in Vancouver or New York, you can enjoy the lovely sub tropical waters of this stretch of coast. A great way to start the New Year.

ATHENS, GREECE

Pic: www.visitedplanet.comGreeks like a good party and this year won't be any different, despite austerity measures. There's normally a few free concerts round the place - check out Syntagma Square, Kotzia Square and Klafthmonos Square in Athens. There will be plenty of fireworks come the stroke of midnight, which is also a time when the Greeks turn off their lights. In some homes this is followed by eating a Basil pie containing a coin or two - whoever finds the coin will have good luck for the year. If you don't want to hang out in Athens then parties will also be happening on the isles, particularly Corfu.

VANCOUVER, CANADA

Pic: Korea TimesEven though its held during deep winter, Vancouver heats up for New Year's Eve with plenty of concerts, fun,  fireworks and frivolity. For an event with a difference  join the longest running Polar Bear Swim in the world. Every year the Polar Bear Swim Club hosts the icy plunge into the waters of English Bay on New Years Day with 1000-2000 other participants. Costumes are welcomed or you can go in your undies for the full cold water effect. We won't tell you the water temperature, but what should warm you is that funds raised go to clean water projects.

BARCELONA, SPAIN

The Catalonians don't need much excuse to party, so why not join them? Barcelona is one of the most exciting cities in the world. You won't have much trouble finding the action, just have 12 grapes with you at midnight. As the clock strikes 12 midnight eat a grape at each stroke and you'll have good luck for the new year.

NEW YORK CITY

Pic: TheGirlsNYCelebrate Big Apple Style this year in New York. For a rollercoaster of highs Times Square is definitely your place on the 31st. Rug up warm and go early to get a good vantage point to watch the 5,386-kg Times Square Ball lowered at the stroke of midnight. Then ring it in with fireworks, music and more fun.

The next morning, if you've got the mojo, head to New York's Coney Island with the Polar Bear Club and join the plunge on New Years Day with other participants. It starts at 1pm sharp.
