About Base Auckland

Base Auckland is New Zealand's most famous hostel located right in the heart of the city - central to shops, cafés, museums and only a couple of minutes’ walk to train, bus and ferry terminals. Things To Do

24 hour reception and swipe card access: Our swipe card security means no curfew – you can come and go as you wish with a swipe of your room card. Reception is open 24 hours to sell VIP memberships, phone cards, t-shirts, film, disposable cameras, postcards, stamps, speedy photo processing, there are payphones, a post box and a money machine in reception, and we do currency exchange and accommodation booking!

24 hour internet café: Our internet café never closes so you can stay in touch, or get a mean espresso coffee, any time of the day or night!

Sky TV lounges: We’ve got two TV lounges on the third floor so you can get all the movies and sport you desire.

Chill out area: Big lazy couches where you can relax, write home, read a book, snooze the afternoon away, or meet some new people!

Modern kitchen and laundry: Located on the third floor we have a huge kitchen with fridges, stoves, microwaves and a large dining area (and a pool table!). Right next door is the laundry with coin operated washers and dryers. Powder is available at reception.

Globe bar: Located under ACB on Darby St the Globe Bar has nightly entertainment and theme nights every day of the week! Globe is the ideal place to meet the locals and mingle with other travelers, and there’s also free punch every night so there’s no excuse not to have a little fun!

Balcony bar: The sixth floor guests only Balcony Bar is the perfect place to chill out with friends and a cold beer. With views of the sky tower and Nightly BBQs in the summer, this is a great place to relax and meet people.

Free nightly BBQ’s: Oh yes, you can eat for free every night of the week! Just ask at reception to find out where the BBQ is held and turn up on time for a feed of sizzling sausages!

Travel desk: With exclusive discounts and deals for Backpackers, this is the ideal place to book your NZ adventure activity and travel. Our travel centre staff are all NZ experts with the local knowledge – they have been there, done that and got the t-shirt!

NZ job search: Our specialist traveler’s employment centre will help you get a bank account, a tax number, and most importantly – a job!! We list jobs all over NZ and have a wide variety of positions available from hospitality and office work to fruit picking and farming. You can also become a member of Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WOOF) or Farm Helpers in NZ (FHINZ) and often work in return for accommodation.

How To get There

International airport: Once through the Customs area, you can turn either left or right. To the left is marked Tours & Groups, this will take you to the bus staging, shuttle and taxi ranks areas outside the glass doors of the building. The Airbus is on the extreme right, past the taxi rank. An Airbus leaves every 20 min. [5:00am - 10pm] from there and this is the cheapest ride into Auckland. They will drop you at our door.

We also have a free phone to Base Auckland backpackers in the Visitor's Information Centre in the main arrivals area. The Receptionist can arrange for a Shuttle driver to collect you from the free phone or give you instructions to get to the Shuttle Rank.

Driving to Base Auckland: Head to Queen Street, this is the main street of Auckland and is marked on every map. Driving down Queen Street, turn left onto Darby Street. This is a smaller street between Victoria and Wellesley Street. You'll see our doorway 5 metres down Darby St, and there is a car park 20 metres further down Darby Street.

Heading back to the airport: When you want to return to the Airport, remember to book your Airbus ticket at reception and get our discounted rate! Airbus picks up at Base Auckland’s door every 20 minutes from 5:10am to 10:00pm and the other shuttles can be booked for a specific pickup time, 24hrs a day. You can take a taxi to and from the airport, but as its 22km from downtown to the airport the fare is much higher than a shuttle or Airbus. If you do take a taxi ask at the reception for a discounted flat rate from the city to the airport.

Remember Customs and Immigration require you to check in two hours before your flight. It’s wise to check in one hour prior to domestic flights, and don’t forget to add travel time to this when you arrange your pickup.
