About Frogshollow Backpackers Darwin

Frogshollow is an independent, purpose-built backpackers hostel located opposite Frog Hollow Park in the Darwin Central Business District. We offer short-term dormitory-style accommodation, as well as double, twin and family rooms. Our hostel derives its name from an area of Darwin known since the 1920`s as Frog Hollow and which encompasses an Art Centre (formerly an infant school), the current park and a number of housing blocks. A creek used to run through the area during the wet season and its swampy nature was particularly popular with frogs. Early settlers and visitors to Darwin recall the deafening noise made by these frogs, many of them housing themselves inside water tanks and pipes. Due to housing shortages, parts of this area, which have now become the park, used to accommodate short-term visitors and settlers upon their arrival in Darwin. Up until the early 1940`s, parts of Frog Hollow tended to be rather "shabby" and were considered "rough". However, it was also a rather thriving multi-cultural environment of hard-working people and social and dancing nights were commonplace. In stark contrast to its lively and colourful origins, Frogshollow is today a peaceful, mainly residential area. Frog Hollow Park and Art Centre were heritage-listed in 1996 and as such guaranteed preservation for future generations. Set on two blocks (approx. 3,000sqm) Frogshollow Backpackers was completed in 1990. It was the first fully purpose-built backpacker accommodation in Darwin. The hostel`s building and layout take maximum advantage of its tropical setting. Long, cool verandas on the first floor and "louvred" windows catch passing breezes. An open-air common and dining area, a salt-water plunge pool and 2 tropical spas complete the hostel`s cool, tropical feel. Both the hostel and the park opposite are lined with tall, beautiful palm trees, which provide additional shading. Even the walking path at the front of the hostel has a serpentine shape to give the area more character. Frogshollow was the winner of a Brolga Tourism Award in 2003 and is an accredited tourism business.

Things To Do

Darwin is a place that is vast and dreamy. You can taste your home faviroutes, smell the exotics and experiment on the wild, when it comes to food in Darwin. Watch the sunset melt into the watery horizen whilst sitting on Mindil Beach listening to the gentle melody of the markets every Thursday and sunday night. Darwin is full of history. The Aboriginal people are vibrant with colour and dance, you can learn to make your own Didgeredoo or visit the Island comunities. Expierence life at is most pure. Darwin was settled much later by European Australians who came to Darwin with the wish to live the outback countryt life, which grew into a melow freedom to relax and enjoy the environment. It has some historic sites that will be exciting to explore if you happy to walk or cycle around town. There are some amazing oil-storage tanks and tunnels from the WWII era, as well as some buildings going back to the beginnings of Darwin in the early 1900’s. In the same part of the city, Parliament House and the Supreme Court are also well worth a visit for their architectural significance. Fish-feeding at Aquascene is always fun and you will have to make sure you come up close and personal with a few big crocodiles at Crocodylus Park. Nightlife is sensational with a plethora of “too-many-to-list” hot pubs and clubs. For a quieter evening, sail the harbour at sunset and enjoy a drink in the cool breeze. Plenty of good value food eateries and restaurants around as well.
