Lava bar: Located right opposite reception, the Lava Bar has a large outdoor sun deck, and has entertainment, theme nights, Xtreme games, live sports on a big screen and a resident DJ most nights of the week! This is Rotorua’s night-time hot spot, mix with locals, mingle with fellow friendly travelers, enjoy Sky TV and meet up with your adventure guides. The friendly and relaxed atmosphere makes it feel like your favorite pub back home.

Travel desk: With exclusive discounts and deals for Backpackers, this is the ideal place to book your NZ adventure activity and travel. Our travel centre’s Kiwi staff are all NZ experts with local knowledge – they have been there, done that and got the t-shirt!

Sundeck and chill out area: There is a big sundeck outside the bar where you can relax, write home, read a book, snooze the afternoon away, or meet some new people!

Internet centre: Stay in touch, or surf the net!

Sky TV lounge: We’ve got Sky TV so you can get all the movies and sport you desire.

How To get There

To and from the airport: The public transport bus ‘City ride’ departs every half-hour between 6.40am and 5.45pm, and only costs $220pp. It's a 5 minute walk to Base Backpackers from the drop off point.

Super Shuttle: The Super Shuttle service ranges in price depending on how many people in the group from $17 for one person to $20 for a group of 3 – and you will get dropped off right at our front door! Heading back to airport: When you want to return to the Airport book the Super Shuttle at Base Backpackers reception and they will collect you.

Driving to Base Rotorua: When leaving Auckland get onto the Southern Motorway (SH1) heading towards Hamilton – then follow the signs! When you get to Tirau get onto the Geothermal Highway SH5. Follow the signs into the city centre, as you enter the CBD, Base Backpackers Rotorua will be the first hostel you see - on the corner of Arawa and Ranolf Streets, we are right opposite Kuirau Geothermal Park.

Backpacker buses: Just Tell the Bus Driver that you’re staying at Base Backpackers Rotorua and they will drop you off at the door.
