A Midsummer Nights Dream - Britten - Opera Australia
It has to be one of Opera Australia's most celebrated productions. Inspired by Shakespeare's poetry and Benjamin Britten's music, visionary director Baz Luhrmann dreamt up a colour-drenched realm of midsummer magic where Indian gods, British colonials and rustic clowns collided, colluded and sometimes fell in love. Now A Midsummer Night's Dream is back.
It all starts with a boy. Tytania, Queen of the Fairies, is besotted with a young Indian Prince. With the help of mischievous Puck, King Oberon plans his humiliating revenge, conjuring up a web of enchantment. Meanwhile, a merry band of mortals, including four lovers and some rough and ready thespians have wandered into the fairies' realm. As the night plays out Oberon ends up catching more than he expects.
Performed in English with subtitles.
Running time: three hours and fifteen minutes including two twenty-minute intervals.

Bliss - Dean Holden - Opera Australia
Harry Joy was to die three times, but it was his first death which was to have the greatest effect on him…

Hymn to beauty- the art of Utamaro
Sensuous, insightful and provocative portraits of beautiful women are the central subject of one of Japan’s most renowned ukiyo-e print artists, Kitagawa Utamaro (1753?–1806).
Utamaro revolutionised the way women were portrayed in Japanese art, visualising passion and physical intimacy like no other Japanese artist before. His alluring and often eroticised depictions of courtesans from the pleasure quarters of Edo (today’s Tokyo), mothers doting on their sons, diligent housewives and star-crossed lovers from literature and theatre are among the finest in Japanese art. Celebrated for their sensual elegance they were so subtle they escaped censorship at the time.
This significant exhibition features over 80 prints by Utamaro and his followers, from the distinguished collection of the Asian Art Museum, National Museums in Berlin.

Max Dupain and John Witzig Exhibition at Dickerson Gallery Sydney
Australia’s iconic beach culture is captured through the ages and eyes of two very different photographers: Max Dupain and John Witzig.
This exhibition provides a historical snapshot of the evolution of Australia’s identity now intrinsically centred on beach culture. Dupain’s images capture life during the 30s and 40s when ladies and gentleman walked the promenade in dresses and suits, surf lifesavers regularly marched the shoreline and a day at the beach was more of a holiday treat. Witzig’s images capture the sub-culture of beach life during the 60s and 70s, a time when Australian surfers carved their names into surfing history with the introduction of the first short boards.
Established in 1992, under the original name of ‘Queen Street Fine Art’, Dickerson Gallery Sydney continues to represent a finely selected group of emerging Australian artists. The Gallery has solo and group exhibitions held monthly with a diverse stockroom selection including paintings, photographs, sculpture, and works on paper.

Paths to Abstraction
Whistler, Monet, Vuillard, Derain, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Kandinsky, Klee, Mondrian and Malevich.
A watercolour by Wassily Kandinsky, painted in 1910 is usually the favoured candidate for the earliest abstract painting. By 1911-1913 dozens of artists from far flung places including Moscow, New York, Paris, London, Munich and Prague all began producing abstract paintings.
This major exhibition surveys the art of five decades from 1867 to 1917 and explores ways that artists and their public, little by little, learned to see and to judge works of art abstractly. Consisting of more than 100 paintings, drawings and prints, the exhibition includes pivotal works that trace the evolution that led to an explosion of abstract art across the world.

Raised partly in Iceland, Eliasson’s work is influenced by that country’s primitive landscape and spectacular weather. He draws upon elements such as light, water, ice, fog, arctic moss and lava rock to create works that shift viewer perception and sense of place.

Tosca - Puccini - Opera Australia
I lived for art, I lived for love, I never harmed a living soul…
Puccini's great aria, ‘Vissi d'arte’, is a moment when time stands still. Who could resist such a heart-breaking appeal? And who could resist Nicole Youl in the title role of Opera Australia's first new production of Puccini's Tosca in almost 30 years?
Although many think of Puccini as the ultimate romantic, Tosca is anything but. There is love, but there is also jealousy, rape and murder. In this production, originally created for Opera North, director Christopher Alden meets the casual brutality and sexual violence head on. An evocative permanent set, designed by Charles Edwards, locates the action in a run-down church vestry, full of ecclesiastical clutter, with a confessional which serves first as a hiding place for Angelotti and later as a torture chamber. The result is confronting and hugely powerful.
Performed in Italian with subtitles.

Up the Cross - Rennie Ellis and Wesley Stacey
In the so-called ‘summer of love’, Kings Cross was as much a magnet for long-haired hippies as it was for US servicemen on leave from Vietnam.
Photographers Rennie Ellis and Wesley Stacey spent six months in 1970–71 capturing the sights, sounds and pulsating rhythms of Sydney’s infamous red-light district: from drag queens to avant-garde artists, celebrities and local characters. This exhibition is a fascinating portrait of life ‘up the Cross’ at a unique moment in time.
