Australian Running Festival

The Australian Running Festival is back for its second year in the nation's capital. Featuring the prestigious Canberra Marathon, the festival also includes an ultra marathon category, a half marathon, along with 5km and 10km fun runs. The Australian Running Festival offers an event for all abilities, from serious runners to joggers, wheelchairs, pushers and walkers. The marathon courses take in some spectacular Canberra sights including Parliament House and other iconic national attractions. Bald Archy Prize 2012

Established in 1994, and now anticipated every year for its irreverent and larrikin approach to portraiture, this is the only art competition in the world to be judged by a sulphur-crested cockatoo named Maude. Bangarra Dance Theatre: Terrain

Try a point to point 100km or 50km mountain bike event linking Canberra's best single track areas including Kowen Forest, Majura Pines and Stromlo Forest Park. Visit the Australian War Memorial's "Nurses: From Zululand to Afghanistan" exhibition. Discover the story of nursing in overseas conflicts. This important aspect of Australia's wartime experience is often neglected. Many women served in dangerous conditions. Like other Australian service personnel, many paid the ultimate price. The display draws on the Memorial's rich collection of photographs, private records and personal objects to trace the involvement of nurses from the first known Australian contribution in the Zulu War of 1879 to operations in Afghanistan today.

For more than 40 years, government bodies dealing with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs built significant art collections, including work by world-renowned artists Rover Thomas, Narritjin Maymuru and Fiona Foley. Penny Byrne: Political Porcelain exhibition

The Museum of Australian Democracy is hosting Political Porcelain, featuring a selection of artworks by contemporary artist, Penny Byrne. Byrne utilises objects familiar from mantelpieces, china cabinets and toy boxes to transform vintage porcelain into powerful works of political commentary. Her artworks convey her concern, anger or amusement. They voice her views on social justice, the environment, war and politics. Remembrance Day

Be at the Australian War Memorial for this important day of remembrance. At 11.00 am on 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. This year marks the 94th anniversary of the armistice on 11 November. Australians pause to remember those who fought and died for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts. Members of the public are encouraged to attend this important ceremony. Please note that the Memorial will be closed during the ceremony and will re-open after the ceremony's conclusion.

Russell Drysdale at war

The Australian War Memorial is paying tribute to one of Australia's leading modernist painters, Sir Russell Drysdale, in a small exhibition, Russell Drysdale at war, which opens on 7 February 2012, the centenary of his birth. Drysdale is best known for his original interpretations of Australia's outback landscape and its people of the late twentieth century, a period of great social change. During the Second World War he also produced a significant collection of works exploring the effects of war and the loneliness and displacement felt by many Australians based in rural communities.

Smalltown

Discover another side of rural Australia at the National Archives of Australia with Smalltown, an exhibition of stark yet beautiful large-format colour images by photographer Martin Mischkulnig. Evoking a sense of desolation, the photographs depict the vast space and 'built ugliness' often found in remote areas of Australia. The accompanying book 'Smalltown' includes the full selection of photographs by Mischkulnig, along with an essay by Tim Winton that challenges sentimental myths of Australian rural life.
