Description
About Guildford Lane Gallery Guildford Lane Gallery is a new contemporary art gallery housed within a century-old furniture factory in the CBD of Melbourne, Australia. The Gallery is a for-hire exhibition and performance space. Our Mission is to develop an encouraging, experimental and dynamic environment for a community that values interaction, education and diversity. Its aim is to continuously evolve and generate collaboration between the international community of visual, literary and performing arts and the public.History of the Site Guildford Lane Gallery embraces the history and character of its building and surrounds. Various clues to its previous existence as the Branchflowers Timber Furniture Factory are evident throughout the gallery along with a growing collection of items with direct links to the history of Guildford Lane. This includes a century-old sprinkler system that is still in operation today, Ted's Peanut labels, the Branchflowers sign by the Guildford Lane entrance as well as the metal working lathe and timber thicknesser on the ground floor. A non-operational turn-on-the-century hydraulic lift, solid timber columns, tongue-and-groove floors and exposed timber joists remain in their raw state for visitors to enjoy.Today the Gallery comprises 720m2 over 3 floors, dedicated to the Arts. Large timber barn doors admit access to the Ground Floor, a magnificent and versatile gallery space. On the first floor are more intimate exhibition and performance spaces, a screening area and the Open Studio. The second floor above retains the open plan of the warehouse and is host to a variety of projects including small theatre productions, lectures, workshops and forums.
