Thirlmere was named after a lake in Cumberland, England. Today it is known for the Thirlmere Rail Heritage Centre which runs Steam Train rides from March to November inclusive on the first and third Sunday of the month. In March the town celebrates the traditional start of the steam season culminating in an annual Steam Festival. Also on the third Sunday of the month is the Thirlmere Rail Craft Markets.
Thirlmere Lakes National Park offer swimming and canoeing as well as a very scenic location. These are among the last undisturbed freshwater lakes in the Sydney region.
