Lesotho - Destination Lesotho
|
Surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho is an independent country that
together with the Drakensberg and the eastern highlands of the free state
make The Roof of Africa. A high mountain plateau, all of Lesotho exceeds
1000m in altitude.
Thabana-Ntlenyana, the highest peak south of Kilimanjaro, is found in
Lesotho. Needless to say, the many mountains in Lesotho makes this country
a hiker's dream come true! Pony trekking is also a great way to see the
Lesotho highlands.
You'll find Lesotho a fascinating country to travel around. Still
relatively underdeveloped, the cultural traditions of the Basotho people
remain strong. The people are very friendly, and most live in isolated
rural villages. Traditional dress consists of the conical Basotho hat
which takes its form after the shape of a hill. You may also see the
people riding proudly on horseback wearing the famous Basotho blanket. |

| Take
care when you travel through Lesotho as the weather is so unpredictable. Both
the winters and summers can be very cold, so it's a good idea to take supplies
with you if you go out in the mountains just in case you get fogged in.
Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, has a population of 110 000. Kingsway
is the main street, and this is where you'll find most of the banks, shops,
places to stay, and the tourist office. Travel 84kms from Maseru to Malealea
where you will find one of the best places in Lesotho to go pony trekking.
Malealea is a great place to go on walking treks too! Visit Basotho villages,
the Botso'ela Waterfall, and swim in the Pitseng Gorge - the scenery is
stunning!
