Mpumalanga - Destination Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga is 'Paradise Country' and has a spectacular landscape consisting of highveld and lowveld with the great Klein Drakensberg in between.  Mpumalanga is renowned for its magnificent scenery and the world famous Kruger National Park (southern section) which is situated on the lowveld.

During the 1870s, Mpumalanga was in the grip of 'gold fever'. Pioneers and fortune-hunters flocked to the region to try their luck at gold prospecting. Now travellers visit Mpumalanga for the history, culture, and the wide and varied flora and fauna.  Kruger National Park is located along the eastern side of Mpumalanga and is home to a large variety of wildlife including the Big Five. Organised tours are a great way to see the wildlife at Kruger, and there are plenty of tours to choose from. Most guides are a wealth of information, and they are experts at spotting the various types of wildlife that roam the park.

For the adventurous, take a trip along the beautiful Blyde River Canyon, a gigantic 26km long gorge that is carved out of the face of an escarpment. The Blyde River Canyon is one of Africa's natural wonders and you can get spectacular views from God's Window.

The largest town in Mpumalanga's lowveld is Nelspruit, which is the province capital. Nestled in the humid Crocodile River Valley, Nelspruit is the commercial hub of the region.

North east of Nelspruit is the small village of Hazyview.   Located on the banks of the Sabie River, Hazyview has a population of around 250 000. The village consists mainly of Afrikaner residents, but there are traditional Zulu and Ndebele villages nearby. Hazyview is close to Kruger Park's Numbi and Paul Kruger gates.
