The capital of Tasmania, Hobart, is Australia's second oldest capital,
the smallest and the most southerly. Situated under the impressive
backdrop of Mount Wellington and straddling the mouth of the Derwent
River, Hobart is a modern city only minutes from world heritage
wilderness.
Hobart Town, as it was known until 1881, was made a city in
1842. An important factor to the cities progress is the
Derwent River estuary, one of the world best deep-water harbours allowing
a steady flow of trade between Tasmania, mainland Australia and the
world.
Hobart has done
well to maintain it's rich heritage of colonial past with
the progress of a modern city. It's busy harbour centre, beautiful
Georgian buildings and laidback ambiance make Hobart one Australia's most enjoyable
cities.
Central precincts include Salamanca Place, featuring beautifully preserved
sandstone warehouses from settlement days and nearby Battery Point with a great
range of cafes and 'ye old worlde' pubs.
Mt Wellington is a 20-minute drive from the city
centre and offers fantastic panoramic views of the city and estuary water
beyond. Port Arthur Historic Site, around one hour south of Hobart
is on of Australia's most significant historic sites and offers a combination
of convict history, spectacular scenery and magnificent waterways. |
