Victoria - Destination Victoria (VIC)

The southeastern state of Victoria has a varied landscape of mountainous terrain to the northeast, rugged coastline in the south and semi-desert in the northwest. In the early days Victoria was sparely populated and primarily a base for whalers, but in 1851 gold was discovered in 'them there hills', the population doubled and the capital Melbourne was formed.

Melbourne is a wonderful city known for its strong Mediterranean influence, great eateries, coffee, clothes and culture. It sits between the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay proudly showing off Victorian architecture and array of beautiful gardens.

This state is sport mad and so, very proud to be host of a number of world class events including the Formula One Grand Prix, the Australian Tennis Open, the Motorcycle Grand Prix and of course the Melbourne Cup horserace.

The Victorian Highlands lie to the states north and were the inspiration behind Australian poet Banjo Paterson's 'The Man From Snowy River' verse.  This landscape of rugged cliff faces, deep gorges and high peaks is a popular skiing spot in winter and bushwalking, fishing and climbing spot in summer.

Victoria's 1,600 km's of coastline is perhaps the most dramatic in Australia, thankfully the states excellent highway system makes it easy to discover.  South of Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road stretches for 280 km's and hugs a spectacular shoreline with impressive rock formations including The Twelve Apostles.  The Great Ocean Road also takes in some beautiful seaside fishing towns well worth the visit.

The Grampians Mountain Range in the west marks the end of the Great Dividing Range and is home to a number of local Koori Aboriginal rock art sites.  To the northwest is the Mallee country with its dry lakes, sand dunes and scrub leading down to the Murray River and Mildura with its orchards and vineyards.
