Botswana - Destination Botswana

Botswana is a vast land-locked area of approximately 600,000 sq km.  It is divided from its neighbours South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia mainly by rivers, some of which flow only during the rainy season.  Two thirds of the country is covered by the Kalahari Desert.

One of the main attractions to Botswana must be the Okavango Delta.  This is the largest inland delta in the world.  Averaging 16,000 sq km's with an abundance of wildlife and culture, this surely must be a highlight of any visitor to the Southern African region.

With a population of just over a million people and a very sound eco tourism policy aimed at low impact tourism, Botswana is set to be a leader in tourism in the region.  Botswana is set to be a leader in tourism in the region.  Botswana was listed for many years as one of the world's poorest countries, but shortly after independence on The 30th of September 1966, they discovered diamonds.  Botswana now has one of the most rapidly expanding economies in the world.  The Pula is the strongest currencies in Africa

Gaborone is the capital dating back to 1887 when a village was built on the banks of the Ngotwane River.  It now has a population in excess of 150,000.  Places of interest include Kolobeng Ruins, Ood Weavers and the Manyelanong Sanctuary, which is a colony of the Cape vultures.

The Chobe is one of the richest wildlife areas in Africa. It has one of the largest elephant populations in Africa estimated at over 35,000.  This is almost five times the elephant population of South Africa.
