Namibia - Destination Namibia
|
Think of Namibia and you will immediately think of space - lots of it!
With a population of 1.5 million in an area of 825 000 km square, Namibia
is one of the world's least densely populated countries. It is also one of
Africa's newest independent nations, gaining its independence from South
Africa in 1990. Since gaining independence, Namibia has gone on to become
quite a prosperous country by African standards with an economy bolstered
by mining, tourism and agriculture.
Predominantly a desert country, the great Kalahari
Desert divides Namibia from South Africa and Botswana, so kilometres of sand dunes
and savannah wilderness are common sights. The best place to visit and
experience these majestic sand dunes is at Sossusvlei, in the heart of
Namib Naukluft Park where the oldest and driest dunes in the world extend
to meet the ocean.
Windhoek is the capital of Namibia and is geographically situated in
the centre of the country. Set amongst the central highlands, Windhoek is
a city that reflects it's past German influence with its colonial turn-of-the-century architecture. |

| With
a population of 160 000, Windhoek, or 'windy corner', is a buzzing mix of at
least 11 ethnic groups. Windhoek is the hub of the country. You'll find plenty
to see and do such as museums, The National Gallery, restaurants, and bars. If
you want an awesome view of the city, take a stroll along Hofmeyer's Walk.
Namibia is also home to the great Etosha Game Park. Situated in the north,
Etosha is a huge area of semi-arid savannah with a salt pan at its centre -
white when dry, and a beautiful green when wet. Etosha is a magnificent game
viewing park and because it is over 23 000 square kilometres, make sure
you allocate a few days to see it!
