A visit to Swaziland is a must! Travellers recommend Swaziland as a
great place to stop because the people are extremely friendly, and there
are loads of places where you can mix with the locals.
Bordered by Mozambique to the east and South Africa to the south, north
and west, Swaziland is the smallest country in the Southern Hemisphere and
one of the last remaining monarchies. The country is ruled by King Mswati
III and every year in August the king takes a new wife. With such a strong
royal tradition in Swaziland there's a good chance that you'll meet a
prince or two on your travels!
There is plenty of wildlife to see in Swaziland too. Not only will you
see the Big Five at the Hlane and Mkhaya Game Reserves, but you may also
see cheetah, hyena, crocodile, and hippopotamus. The latter is a refuge
for endangered species such as the black and white rhino.
Mbabane is the largest town in Swaziland and this is where you will
find most banks and consulates. Visit the Swazi market for African
handicrafts (and make sure you haggle), or ask the witchdoctor for a love
potion! The Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is only a half hour drive from
Mbabane and this is where you can view hippos up close. |
