Gauteng - Destination Gauteng

Gauteng - A Sotho word meaning "Place of Gold".  Gauteng is a small province with an area of only 19 000 sq kilometres. This is an amazing fact because it has the largest population of all South Africa with a whopping 10 million people! Its exciting history of discovery has allowed this area to grow into the country's most productive city. Johannesburg and Pretoria seem to hold most of the attractions for travellers to Gauteng.

Johannesburg is actually sitting on a reef of gold. The gold, however, doesn't only come in rock form around here. The golden sunny summers are also a heart warmer in this comfortable climate. As in many temperate climates summer storms usually brew up. These can be quite spectacular as they sweep across the highveld. When in Jo'burg take a guided tour of Soweto. This is quite safe and definitely worthwhile. One of the most densely populated areas in South Africa is Hillbrow. An amazing view can be seen from the top of the Carlton Centre. If you go up to the 50th floor, you can get a bird's eye look at the surrounding landscape.

For some serious entertainment, don't miss the Market Theatre. You can experience some live theatre, enjoy a cold drink in their relaxed pub and dance the night away to some of the best jazz in town. For those of you that like theme parks, Jo'burg has one of its very own. 'Gold Reef City' is a reconstruction of the history of Johannesburg and offers entertainment and rides.

Pretoria is a majestic area about 50 km north of Jo'burg. It is known for its history, nightlife, and colourful gardens. When in Pretoria, visit the National Zoo where you can enjoy a cable car ride that runs up a rocky hill that overlooks the city. There is also Pretoria's beautiful National Botanical Gardens which offers a huge 77 hectares of native flora to explore.
